I hope that you are doing well in this stressful time. With a consequential election season in process and new spikes of COVID, you are not alone if you are unsettled.
Let me say that again: You are not alone.
God has given us each other to walk through times like this together. And the Holy One is with us in the midst of whatever fear or unrest we may be experiencing.
If you’re in need of a pause, I invite you to take 10 minutes to experience peace and Divine Presence with this video meditation upon the promises of Psalm 139:
|This sacred reading allows us not to study the text but to listen for what God might be saying to us through the text.|
The simple process involves reading the text three times, leaving a moment for reflection between each one:
First to notice what words or phrases stand out to us.
Second to listen for what God might be saying to you through the words or phrases you noticed.
Third to respond to what you’ve heard from God.
If you’d rather do this on your own instead of watching a video, the text is below. It is a portion of Psalm 139, as rendered in The Message, which I have rendered a dialogue between the reader — you — and God.
Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions, or want to discuss this meditation, or to share prayer concerns and joys.
|Psalm 139 Dialogue:|
Me: God , investigate my life; get all the facts firsthand.
God: You’re an open book to me; even from a distance, I know what you’re thinking. I know when you leave and when you get back; You’re never out of my sight. I know everything you’re going to say before you start the first sentence.
Me: I look behind me and you’re there, then up ahead and you’re there, too— your reassuring presence, coming and going. This is too much, too wonderful— I can’t take it all in! Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit? to be out of your sight?
God: If you climb to the sky, I’m there! If you go underground, I’m there! If you flew on morning’s wings to the far western horizon, I’d find you in a minute— I’m already there waiting!
Me: Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark! At night I’m immersed in the light!”
God: It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to me; night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to me.
Me: Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong— then guide me on the road to eternal life.
